When Eric Bana was awarded Bachelor of the Year in 1996 he won two tickets to the United States. And Eric knew exactly how to use his prize. He took his girlfriend Rebecca on holiday – and came back engaged!

Now the Full Frontal funnyman is busy planning his wedding, and he’s already been approached by media wanting pictures of the big day. But Eric’s ahead of them all. He knows exactly which magazine he’ll be giving the scoop to.

“I might see if Street Car Magazine is interested!” he joked. “Cars have always been my number one love.”

In fact, when he’s not busy writing material for The Eric Bana Show Live, Eric can usually be found riding his Ducati motorbike or under the bonnet of his 1974 Ford Falcon coupe – his pride and joy since he was 15. At school, Eric, now 28, dreamed mainly about cars and motorbikes. He didn’t really give much thought to a career, let alone fame and fortune.

“I was too busy reading car magazines! My plan was to get my HSC, and just get out of school – I never had any interest in tertiary education.”

But even then Eric was notorious for his impersonations. And it was largely thanks to his spot-on mimicry of teachers and mates that Eric ended up repeating Year 11!

“That turned out to be the best thing I ever did in my life,” he said. “There were about 10 of us who repeated, so I had heaps of mates. It was great – I had time to muck around.”

It was probably mucking around that helped shape one of Australia’s most popular comedians. After landing a guest spot on Full Frontal, Eric ended up staying for three-and-a-half years, his impersonations of Stan Grant, Mike Willesee and Ray Martin making him a household name. But late last year he was given the opportunity to do a solo special. The show was such a success that Eric was offered his own tonight show – and he jumped at the chance.

“This is the best job I’ve ever had!” Eric told Post. “It’s like playing in the sand pit with your mates. The show is a true representation of me, and there’s good and bad in that.”

“After the first show, people were saying I looked a bit nervous, and that the second show was better – well, derr! Everybody is nervous for the first day at a new job – I’m just like everybody else.”

In fact, Eric reckons he’s totally unaffected by the fame. He’s still the same boy who grew up in the Melbourne suburb of Tullamarine.

“All my closest friends are old school mates,” he said. “This whole ‘famous’ thing has been a very slow, steady progress for me and anybody who knows me, so it hasn’t affected any friendships or anything.”

“My mates love it that I’m where I am. They let me know when something’s a really bad idea, or a dumb joke. They’re a great bunch of guys. I’m really lucky to have kept in contact.”

“Some people seem to think it’s been a really quick amount of time for me to have got to where I am, but it hasn’t seemed quick to me. I never had plans to do stand-up for the next 25 years – I had definite goals. Although I never really dreamed of having my own Tonight show!”
