Since it was first run in 1997, Classic Adelaide has become one of the world's great rallies. It is Australia's premier International tarmac rally for classic sporting vehicles and under its 'Sensational Adelaide' naming sponsorship, promotes South Australia to the world.
The Classic Adelaide Rally is an international standard 'special stage' rally spanning four days, preceded by a field-seeding Prologue, with the classic rally cars and drivers racing the clock on almost 35 special stages on closed roads, with timing to the second. The Competition is open to cars built prior to 1982 and incorporates three separate contests, each sharing equal status. The winners of each contest are treated equally and there is no overall winner based on elapsed time declared. However, an overall winner is dclared between the Classic and Late Classic contests by the use of a handicap system.
The Classic Adelaide Rally will have three winners based on elapsed time and each will share equal status:
Historic for vehicles built up to 1947
Classic for vehicles built between 1948 and 1971
Late Classic for vehicles built between 1972 and 1990

Leading Australian comedian turned award-winning actor, Eric 'Chopper' Bana, will compete in this year's Classic Adelaide at the wheel of his own 1974 Falcon XB coupe.Bana, a closet motor sport enthusiast, will become a magnet for media attention, but the 33 year old Melbourne-born actor assures fellow competitors that he's in the event for fun, not fame.Bana only began his show business career as a stand-up comedian while working as a barman at Melbourne's Castle hotel in 1991, but within two years he had broken through to television. His film debut came with a supporting role in the 1997 Australian film 'The Castle' in 1997, but it was his portrayal of notorious crime figure Mark Read that earned him a 'Best Actor' nomination from the Australian Film Institute for his leading role in the film 'Chopper'. More recently, he has been cast in the coveted role of Dr. Bruce Banner in the Ang Lee-directed adaptation of "The Incredible Hulk" due out next year.

Star of 'Black Hawk Down', 'Hulk' and 'Troy', Eric Bana also returns to Classic Adelaide to drive in the competition section of Classic Adelaide. Eric last drove in the 2002 Classic and will again bring his V8 Falcon Hardtop he first purchased when he was 14 years old. Bana has been a keen motor sports competitor in the Porsche 944 Challenge Cup series this year to further hone his skills as a race driver.
How Footy Pain Was Bana's Achilles's Heel

He may be all smiles, but Eric Bana is still hurting. An avid St Kilda fan, he is "gutted" by his team's preliminary final loss to Port Adelaide.
"I'm still cut up about it," he says frankly. In fact, the 'Troy', 'Chopper' and 'Hulk' star rated it as even worse than the Grand Final loss to the Crows in 1997. "The Grand Final slowly evolved all the way through the final quarter so you could prepare for it a bit, but this year, when the siren went, it was like someone had hit me over the head with a baseball bat." He did not travel to AAMI Stadium for the game, which was probably a good thing.
"I'm a pretty ugly supporter. I was warned I should stay home and I'm glad I did," he explains. "Only your wife should ever see you cry." In Adelaide to compete in the Classic Adelaide Rally, he is a world away from the hullabaloo of Hollywood and happy to be spending time in Australia. Bana is on a year-long break and having a holiday back home in Melbourne between films, after production of Steven Spielberg's Vengeance was pushed back to next year. We hear Jennifer Aniston told hubby Brad Pitt his Achilles costume was a keeper, so what did Bana's wife Rebecca think of his Hector outfit?
"She loved it," he says with a wicked grin. It seems he has laid off the training a bit since finishing Troy, though. "I've got a happy medium at the moment. You can't turn into Humpty Dumpty between films, it's too hard to get back," he chuckles.

Motoring enthusiast and actor Eric Bana, with film titles such as 'Black Hawk Down', 'Troy' and 'Chopper' to his credit, has had a change of plans in terms of the car he is to drive in this year's Classic Adelaide. Originally Bana was to have competed in a V8 Falcon Hardtop he drove in the event in 2002 and has owned since he was 14. That plan came to naught when the engine cried enough and a con rod let go while testing the car at Calder Raceway in Victoria. Bana will now compete in the Classic Adelaide in a Porsche 944, a car that he used with some good effect as a circuit racecar competing in the Victorian State Series.
