ERIC Bana's wife, Rebecca, has more important things on her mind than battling with stylists and beauty therapists in preparation for the Oscars next week.
"I'm too busy trying to get all the washing done to worry about the Oscars," she said.
"I'm the normality maintainer -- that is my role. It's not always easy, but I try to create an environment as close to normal for the children. It's so important to do that."
Determined to stay in Melbourne to raise their children, the Banas strive to live as simply as possible.
"We're clinging on to Melbourne for dear life," Ms Bana said.
"It's such a great place to bring up the children. There is the odd place -- a shopping mall or airport -- where we are recognised, but mostly we just have a normal life -- and that's what we want."
Ms Bana is taking time out from caring for children Klaus, 6, and Sophia, 4, this week to attend the L'Oreal Melbourne Fashion Festival. A huge fan of fashion, Ms Bana, 38, particularly favours Australian designers, including Akira, Scanlan & Theodore, Nicola Finetti, Collette Dinnigan, Martin Grant and Carla Zampatti.
Renee Zellweger's publicist paid her the ultimate compliment at the Golden Globes.
"She came up to me and said 'You are the best dressed of the night'," she said.
Ms Bana and her famous husband, star of Stephen Spielberg's Munich, have never been to the Oscars, but she said they were not nervous about their inaugural appearance next Sunday.
She is looking forward to taking some time on the red carpet to observe the stars.
"These events are easy for me because I'm the last person anyone is looking at -- I'm just voyeuristic," she said.
"I think if Eric had been nominated I would be more nervous."

Eric Bana on 'Munich'

He's played characters torn from classical literature and comic books, but for his latest big screen outing actor Eric Bana has got his teeth into a role more at home on the front pages of our newspapers.

Eric Bana - "I'm an actor, not a bloody politician!"
Munich, directed by Steven Spielberg, is the retelling of the aftermath of the murder of 11 Israeli athletes at the 1972 Munich Olympics.
It had been dubbed "The Olympics of Peace and Joy", but it was the catalyst for a bloody campaign of revenge which still reverberates around the globe today.
In the film, Bana, 37, plays Avner, a special agent charged with leading a small band of Israeli assassins to kill the Palestinians responsible for the Munich tragedy.
It is a story that has, unsurprisingly, drawn criticism from all sides, but the star of Troy and Hulk is unapologetic.
"I think the controversy is a healthy sign," says Bana. "No-one can sign off on what actually happened. So there are some facts and some poetic licence involved. How you join the dots doesn't change the central themes of the film, about notions of home."

Finally this morning, it seems that DreamWorks has been soliciting advice about the cover artwork for Munich (TBA, but we expect it to be announced soon for release on 5/9 via Paramount).
Bits reader Ed K. participated in an online survey last week, in which he was asked to select his favorite among the following five choices (keep in mind all of these are early mock-ups only)...

GRAYDON CARTER AND TOM FORD TALK ABOUT FORD'S ROLE PRODUCING VANITY FAIR'S HOLLYWOOD PORTFOLIO
Fashion icon Tom Ford, former Gucci and Yves Saint Laurent creative director and the guest artistic director of Vanity Fair's 2006 Hollywood portfolio, says of the sexy Annie Leibovitz cover shot of Keira Knightley, Scarlett Johansson, and Ford himself, "People won't believe me, but I did not want to be on the cover." Ford had envisioned a gorgeous female threesome, but when one of the young actresses demurred as the clothes started coming off, they were left with only two. "Three girls in a bed is a bedful of girls, but two girls in a bed are lesbians. At the end of the shoot, Annie asked me to slip into the picture as my contributor's photo," says Ford. Vanity Fair editor Graydon Carter adds, "When I saw the shot of Keira and Scarlett, and Tom, I thought the cover worked better with the three of them."
The Hollywood Issue of Vanity Fair hits newsstands in New York and Los Angeles on February 8, and nationally on February 14.
"We didn't force anyone to take off their clothes," insists Ford. "In a couple of instances we had to ask them to put them back on! I've always said, and I mean it, that I find people better-looking without clothes than with clothes.
